Rear Garden Makeover – Wynn Vale
Whilst at first glance this rear garden is fairly nondescript and tired, with a little imagination and planning it only required minimal inputs at relatively low cost to enhance the setting
The customer brief sought to retain good access to various sheds on property, soften boundary fences and use planting that wouldn’t be swamped by autumn leaves from the dominate White Cedar tree in SE corner of property, all whilst creating an attractive setting. Native plants were chosen by Landimpact, and in keeping with our philosophy of encouraging the use of native plants in urban gardens
Once the site was cleared of leaf litter and unwanted shrubs, new gardens were set out along boundary fences and around low retention that was extended to pick up level changes close to the existing paving. The low block wall and rock retention utilised materials already on-site. The garden edges were defined by a simple spaded edge, deep enough to support the new mulch depth
Prior to planting all soil in new garden areas was reconditioned with layer of compost, gypsum and blood and bone which was worked into top 200mm of soil profile. All new planting was a mix of native plants and grasses including Lillypillys and tall Lomandras along fencelines and lower plantings in retained garden including massed Westringias, Dianellas, Eremophilas and smaller Lomandras. A small Bottlebrush tree was planted in the lower retained garden, ultimately to soften the entry to the area and provide some vertical contrast but also to provide shade and reduce reflective heat. A drip irrigation was installed to help plants establish initially, once established plants should only require a deep watering once per week/fortnight in summer months
Pebbles were spread to paths and access points by my customer, who also installed a bird bath and seat to further enhance the setting and to enable the space to be more utilised and appreciated
